If you’re suffering from haemorrhoids, you’re not alone.
Caused by high pressures leading to engorgement of the veins in the anorectal region, haemorrhoids (also known as ‘piles’) most commonly occur in older adults and increase in incidence with age, although they may also occur in children and younger adults. Among the younger cohort, haemorrhoids tend to occur more frequently in pregnant women. Various other factors that may contribute to this condition include heavy lifting, straining during bowel movement, chronic constipation, obesity and prolonged inactivity or sitting in one position for too long.
